Philmont, NY - The Village of Philmont will honor area veterans with a special "THANK A VET DAY" on Sunday, August 24th at the Claverack Town Park, 91 Church St., Mellenville. The "THANK A VET DAY" event will begin at 11:30 am with an opening ceremony at the park. Details of the ceremony are being finalized and additional information regarding the names of those participating in the ceremony will be provided at a late date.
"The Village Board has been very interested in doing something special for our men and women who have served and are serving in the Armed Forces," said Philmont Mayor Clarence "Skip" Speed. "This will be a day when everyone can get together and say thank you and honor those that have given of their time and put their lives on the line for our country."
Doug Cropper, Trustee of the Philmont Village Board said, "The Village of Philmont is proud to support the Thank a Vet program. We care deeply about the sacrifices our soldiers have made, and continue to make to keep our country free. We look forward to expressing our gratitude to our local service men and women in person on August 24th."
Mayor Speed has named Jack Race and Janice Anderson to co-chair the event. Also serving on the committee are Charles Brewer, Treasurer and Barbara Sagal Village Trustee. Mr. Race noted that there would be a chicken BBQ, with a limited number of tickets sold, which will begin at noon. Tickets to the BBQ are now on sale at the Philmont Village office at $5.00 for veterans and $10.00 for the general public. Tickets may also be ordered by phone by calling 851-5004 or 672-4892. Additional food and beverages will be offered throughout the day at a reduced price. There will be free ice cream and cake for all who attend.
Mayor Speed has announced that two musical groups will be providing lie entertainment at the Thank a Vet celebration. They include the Ben Rounds Band, which will perform between noon and 3 pm. The group will feature a medley of patriotic songs and selections honoring each of our military services. South Bound, will take the stage beginning at 3 pm, playing their well-known country music.
The Mayor also noted that this event is open to both past and present military members. Vendors are encouraged to participate in the Thank a Vet Day.
