At this year’s summer reading program, the young patrons of the Philmont Public Library will study explorers, especially Henry Hudson, who 400 years ago explored the Hudson River. We will also learn about the Hudson River and the people who inhabited the lands before Hudson made his historic voyage. For the past several months and continuing until July, the library has been collecting photos that patrons have taken while on vacation with Flat Henry. A display of the pictures will be on a world map on the library front lawn. So far Henry has been to France, England, the Caribbean and all over the United States and Canada. If you are going on a trip to another part of the world soon, please pick up a copy of Henry Hudson at the library, take a picture of Henry and bring in a photo or email us at library@philmont.org.
The Summer Reading Program is a wonderful opportunity for children to continue to enjoy reading and learn about a variety of topics. Sign-up packets for the Summer Reading Program are available at the library. Ages 5 – 7 will be meeting on Tuesdays from 3 to 4:30. Ages 8 -12 will be meeting on Thursdays from 3 to 4:30. This year, we are pleased to present several very special guests, including one concert which will be open for all to attend. John Farrell, internationally known children’s musician and singer/songwriter, will be performing a musical concert on July 14th at 3PM at the library. John integrates educational lessons in easy to sing along music. Signed CDs will be available for for purchase at the concert. The rain location is at the Claverack Town Park. The remaining programs are for the Summer Reading Program only and include local children's musical artist Amy Hilliard, and Carol Smalley creating relief maps of the Hudson River. The summer reading program is limited to 25 in each group and fills up quickly each year, so stop by the library and pick up a packet before it is too late. |
