The 81st Annual Columbia County Volunteer Firefighters Association Convention will be held in Philmont the last weekend in July. The first convention was also hosted by Philmont in 1926. Conventions are held in the home fire association of the current president; John Blaauw has served as President since last year's convention.
The public is invited to watch the parades that will be held on Friday and Saturday.
Friday night's parade -- a Mardi Gras parade -- will step off at 6 p.m. sharp from the intersection of Route 217 and Martindale Road and will end at the Claverack Town Park. This parade will be a fun time for all who are along the parade route. Chairman of this parade is Dick Howard.
On Saturday the full-dress parade will begin at 2 p.m. from Pine Haven and will also end at the Claverack Town Park. The grand marshall is Stanley Stickles, a Philmont resident and past Treasurer of the C.C.U.F.A. Co-Chairmen of the parade are Bill Blaauw and Bruce Babjeck. Special guest to Philmont for the parade will be 30 residents of the Firemen's Home in Hudson.
There will be no parking on the streets along the parade route -- Main Street and Church Street.
Other activities being held during the weekend are for those attending the convention as representatives of their fire companies.
