Many festivities are planned for Philmont’s Annual Community Day to be held this year on Saturday, July 19th.
The day begins with a Fishing Derby from 7:30-9:30AM at Summit Lake (the Reservoir) on Lake Shore Drive. Kids through age 17 are invited to participate to catch fish. Prizes, sponsored by Novapak, will be awarded for different age categories for the largest fish. Novices as well as fishing fans are invited, and some poles will be available for children who don’t have one.
The events continue with a 5K/FunRun/Walk. Registration begins at 8:30 and the 5k run will kick off at 9AM. It is a fun course through historic Philmont, beginning at the Philmont Firehouse on Maple Avenue. There is a $10 registration fee and T-shirts will be given to all paid participants. At 8:45 AM there will be a FunWalk with a shorter course for those who do not run (and children), who will be given a T-shirt with a $10 paid registration (a paid registration is not required for the FunWalk). Post-race refreshments will be served, and prizes will be awarded. The T-shirts, featuring a photo of High Falls by Steve Benson on the front, list the local sponsors on the back; all proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Philmont Library.
From 10AM-2:00PM Main Street and Maple Ave will come alive. With the support of the Tri-State Mopar Car Club, you can vote on your favorite vintage car, available for viewing on Maple Avenue. Get your vote in before prizes will be awarded at 1:30 PM. The children will enjoy kids’ activities on the lawn on Maple Avenue and COARC is sharing their Safety Town. The Philmont Library will hold their annual book sale on the lawn of the Library on Main Street and there will be tag sales, vendors and food sales from the Friends of the Library, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and more. Music will entertain throughout the day on the Village Green (on Maple Avenue) starting with the Gospel Chords of Catskill, NY at 10:00 (sponsored by the Philmont Reformed Church), Mitchell Burch of Philmont at 11AM and Les Davala of Philmont at 12PM. A “Made In Philmont” showcase sponsored by Philmont Beautification Inc. will be open from 10AM-2PM as well as 5PM-8PM at 119 Main Street, where you can experience the hidden treasures of artists, artisans, photographers, stone masons, contractors, book illustrators, couture accessories, cabinetry, organic health products, music, handmade furniture, web design, real estate, and more located in Philmont.
At 2:00 PM the vintage cars and others will gather for a parade down Main Street. Then, while the adults take a rest, the children can gather for a softball game sponsored by the Philmont Police at 3:00 PM at Memorial Field on Church Street.
The activities move to Lake Shore Drive at Summit Lake/The Reservoir/Philmont Community Center and get underway at 5:00PM when the Philmont Fire Department will be offering Chicken BBQ meal pickup (tickets are $10 and can be purchased either ahead or on that day from any Volunteer Fire Fighter). You can pick up your meal and stay there, enjoying the view of the lake, while DJ Spin sets up for the dance and music block party from 6PM-10PM.
The Community Day Committee, co-chaired by Robin Andrews and Jeff Bancroft, raised over $700 this year with a newspaper commemorating the event, sharing the schedule and offering supporters a marketing opportunity in over 1000 copies.
